Wayne did not think about his family in the same way the boys thought of their mother. Not even in the offhanded I hope they’re all right way that Morgan thought of her parents; not being in a city made them safe, probably, maybe, she hoped. The first point that struck home fully about the suggestion of apocalypse happening around him was that surely Wayne’s parents would die. If nothing else good occurred in the history of mankind, at least they were surely dead.

From the trunk, Wayne handed off a tire iron to Hugo, a short-shafted hockey goalie stick that he used to clear the roof of his car during heavy snowfalls to Carlos, and the foot-long chain-link spike mat to Morgan. She tested different ways to swipe it. The best bet was to use it like a two-handed whip, overhead, bringing it down.

“Hopefully, we don’t need these,” Wayne said.

Carlos and Hugo felt like bad asses, ready to whoop some creeps. Morgan shook her head gently at the pair; she had a splitting headache and wished to lie down for awhile, a month perhaps.

A stiff chill had come into the air and the sun had nearly set. The streetlights should’ve already begun burning but were not. Someone or something had cut power to the neighborhood. In every direction, near and far, glass broke, steel rattled, shots rang out, and screams played upon evening. Destruction was rampant on the block. Things were not good. Not here, not at school, nowhere in the city.

“Do you think it’s like this everywhere?” Hugo asked.

“No idea,” Wayne said.

“Can’t be, right?” Morgan had thought the same thing as the boys, but wanted reassurance that flowers bloomed somewhere, that children sang, and that neighbors didn’t bite hunks from throats. “I mean, the government…”

Mutated soldiers.

Who else was mutated?

There was no real control to begin with, only the idea of it. That idea, now, was a notion of the past and hope for the future. They walked down the center of the street. The group of teenage vigilantes had disappeared amid the broken-down cityscape. The building came into view. It remained standing and neat; now looked in far better condition than the neighboring buildings. At first, as far as the sight of the boys went. Their building was never the nicest one, never the one a kid could brag about. Now, if only life were back to normal, it maybe was bragworthy by comparison.

“That’s it,” Hugo said pointing. He walked with his hands over his chest where Jesse had scratched him. “Hey, it’s not like zombies, right? I’m not gonna be a zombie now, right?”

“Hey, yeah?” Carlos said.

“Doesn’t seem that way. You’d already be a zombie, if it was. I think?”

The boys said nothing further on the subject.

“Fourth floor you say?” Wayne said.

A nearby scream stalled their motion, and they huddled in close. Wayne stretched out his arm, ready to fire. A scream volleyed the first, closer and yet somehow beyond sight, moving outside view.

“Come on,” Wayne said.

They walked slowly toward the apartment building.
